Leaked Samsung Galaxy Gear pictures show a chunky design, but it may only be a prototype

There’s only two days to go until Samsung officially unveils its rumoured Galaxy Gear smartwatch, but a purported prototype has leaked out ahead the South Korean manufacturer’s IFA event. VentureBeat posted pictures taken from a demo video showing off the watch, going on to list the key features as well as some rough specifications.

The Galaxy Gear doesn’t look particularly fashionable, but it may be because Samsung is positioning it as a health and fitness tracker. The built-in 4-megapixel camera on the watch strap will let you tag pictures of food, for example, with some Android apps also pre installed that will allow wearers to monitor their general health. Otherwise, VentureBeat has reaffirmed the size of the device, falling between 2.5- and 3-inches.

That chunky design isn’t finalized, however. GigaOm followed up VentureBeat’s report with one of its own, saying that the pictured smartwatch is a prototype. According to the publication, Samsung will show off a slightly different version of the watch at its event on September 4th.

Still, it sounds like Samsung may be trying to do a little too much with the device. GigaOm went on to say that the Galaxy Gear can pair with any device using Bluetooth 4.0 LE, and that it can even be used for phone calls thanks to the inclusion of speakers and a microphone. Other specs for the wearable are said to include a dual-core Exynos processor, NFC, Android 4.3, and between 10 to 24 hours of battery life. We’ll find out exactly what Samsung has come up with on September 4th.
