DoubleTwist for Android update adds AirPlay and DLNA streaming and beta support for Sonos speakers

With Amazon’s MP3 app, Spotify and 7digital all recently rolling out major updates to their Android apps, DoubleTwist comes out of the woodwork with an update and shows the kids how its done.

The ‘iTunes for Android’ app now allows you to stream music via AirPlay speaker docks and other AirPlay-compatible gubbins in the same way as you would from your iPhone 4 – now you can do it from any compatible Android phone as well.

If that wasn’t enough, the latest iteration of DoubleTwist bungs in streaming support for DLNA devices and beta support for streaming to Sonos speakers as well.

We’re not sure how this’ll will compare with the Sonos Controller app that was (finally) released on the Android Market last month – we’re guessing not that well seeing as it’s a beta version.

The DoubleTwist player itself for Android is free, but in order to do things like wirelessly sync your playlists (as well as use any of the above features), you’ll need to purchase the DoubleTwist AirSync add-on for £3.

DoubleTwist and AirSync both work on Android phones running 1.6 Donut and above and can be downloaded from the Market now.

As well as the Android app(s) you’ll need to download the desktop app too; you can find Windows and Mac versions here.
