Infinity Blade, the first iOS game to use Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 technology, was released on Thursday last week. Just five days later, the game has already grossed over $1.6m, to make it the fastest grossing app ever in the App store, according to AppModo.
Sounds like we’re talking about a film release, doesn’t it? Gaming apps could be set to go the way of the movie, with ever increasing quality and demand pushing revenues (and, probably, costs) sky-high.
It’s reassuring that someone, somewhere is making money from app sales – however, it’s worth remembering that Infinity Blade was subject to some serious marketing clout from Apple (keynote speeches, TV ads etc).
Still, over a quarter of a million people have downloaded the £3.49/$5.99 app in less than a week, which is pretty darn impressive if you ask us. The exact figures aren’t available, with Mark Rein from Epic tweeting that the reported stats are “quite a bit lower than the actual sales :)”.
It’s going to be a very Merry Christmas in the Epic household, we have no doubt.
