Steve Ballmer officially reveals Windows Phone 7

It’s not like we didn’t know it was coming, but Steve Ballmer has taken the stage in New York to officially launch Windows Phone 7, Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system. Hoping to leave the horrors of Windows Mobile far behind it,

Microsoft is keen to press the point that it has re-imagined its mobile software and come up with “a different kind of phone”.
Hitting worldwide shelves on October 21st, the range of Windows Phone 7 launch handsets is satisfyingly wide. Nine handsets from LG, Samsung, HTC and Dell were shown off at the press conference in New York, of which at least six will be making their way to UK shops. Microsoft says over 60 mobile operators will be offering Windows Phone 7 in more than 30 countries, with T-Mobile, Orange, O2, Vodafone and Three all handling the UK market at launch.

Whether or not chucking a £4m marketing budget at a mobile operating system will make it a success remains to be seen…

UPDATE: Copy and paste will be coming to Windows Phone 7 in early 2011.
