The latest flavour of Android is officially Lollipop, revealed today by Google alongside two new Nexus devices – the Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet. Here’s the full Android 5.0 Lollipop skinny.
Android 5.0 Lollipop
Android 5.0 Lollipop has already been teased by Google, back at the Google I/O event in June, where we first saw some of the cool new features and slick overhauled design. However, Google has now officially revealed its latest OS, which is built to give a streamlined experience when swapping between different Android devices.
The new ‘material design’ gives a consistent look and feel as you swap from phone to tablet, with the ability to easily share music, movies, apps and more. We’re hoping that means that closing a podcast or film on your phone will allow you to pick up exactly where you left off on your tablet, for instance. We’re also hoping that playing games on different devices will become a more satisfying experience, with saved games and progress shared consistently no matter what you’re playing.
Improved notifications also means you can specify exactly who can interrupt you, and when.

Google Nexus 6 phone
Google has joined forces with Motorola to craft the six-inch Nexus 6 phablet/phone, boasting a shiny aluminum body and a 6-inch Quad HD display.
As well as a supremely sharp and massive screen, you get two front-facing speakers (like HTC’s BoomSound speakers), making this a phone geared towards media lovers. There’s also a 13-megapixel camera for super-sharp snaps.
A Snapdragon 805 processor will provide buckets of power. As for battery life, the Nexus 6 has a Turbo Charge feature that gives up to six hours of use from just 15 minutes of charge, handy if you forget to charge up until just before you bugger off out of the house.
The Nexus 6 will be available to pre-order at the end of October in the UK, and in stores from November. O2 has already confirmed it’ll be stocking the phone, and you can choose from two colours – midnight blue and cloud white.
Google Nexus 9 tablet
HTC has created its first tablet since the ill-fated Flyer, and we’re hoping its collaboration with Google for the Nexus 9 will be a lot more successful.
The Nexus 9 is, of course, a 9-inch tab (or 8.9-inches if you want to be pedantic) that looks set to take on the iPad Mini with its thin and light build. And with its already-leaked magnetic keyboard case, it’ll hopefully be a worthy tablet to stay productive on the move.
As for the specs, there’s an Nvidia Tegra K1 processor stashed inside, offering ridiculous amounts of graphical power which is perfect for gamers and creative users. You also get an 8-megapixel camera to shoot stuff with and a 1.6-megapixel front camera for video chats.
The Nexus 9 will be available to pre-order on Friday October 17th and will hit stores on November 3rd here in the UK. Again, O2 has confirmed that it will stock the device.
