Game of Thrones series 7 has finally smashed its way back onto UK televisions, well over a year after season 6 ended. Here’s all you need to know about the seventh season, including how many episodes there will be, how to watch or stream each episode and what new characters to expect.
We might be well into the warmer weather here in the UK, but winter has well and truly arrived for the cast of Game of Thrones as we slip into season 7. The penultimate season of GoT promises more twists and turns than ever before, plus some almighty battles as the main contenders for the iron throne finally clash.
When does each episode of Game of Thrones series 7 air?
The first episode of the show aired on July 16, 2017 in the US and July 17 here in the UK, at the rather inhospitable time of 2am (as it was broadcast at the same time here and Stateside). Subsequent episodes of Game of Thrones will be broadcast on a weekly basis at the same time, for seven weeks.

How many episodes will be in series 7?
While previous seasons of Game of Thrones delivered 10 episodes, the seventh series has just 7 episodes in total. Despite this reduction in size, however, it sounds like the scale of the series 7 shoot has actually increased. The creators of the show have taken just as long to film this season as previous seasons, meaning we can expect some truly epic battles and set pieces.
A recent reveal also promised a feature-length, extended episode to end the series. The last episode of season 7 will apparently be an hour long, making it the lengthiest GoT broadcast to date.
Where can I watch the Game of Thrones series 7 trailer?
Right here! HBO recently posted the below trailer, showing off some scenes from the new season. Looks like the battle for the iron throne is fast reaching its bloody climax, with the Lannisters pinned in from every direction. The advancing Greyjoys, the Dorne Sand Snakes and Cersei’s dragon army are all within reach, not to mention wildcards like Arya Stark.
Of course, all of this fighting could be a waste of valuable lives when the White Walkers descend from the north. Will we see some uneasy truces form in series 7, to stand against the undead legions? We think not. Season 7 is likely to deal with the conflicts between the different human factions, while the final battle against the White Walkers will likely form the 8th and final series of Game of Thrones.
Who are the new characters in series 7?
Tom Hopper (Black Sails) has joined the GoT cast and is likely to be playing the character of Dickon Tarly, a role previously inhabited by Freddie Stroma (albeit rather briefly).
Series 7 will also see Maester Marwyn make his entrance, played by the inimitable Jim Broadbent. The Maester will appear in scenes with Sam Tarly at the Citadel.
There’s also talk of Ed Sheeran making an appearance in a brief cameo, and indeed he’s popped up in the IMDB listings. Here’s hoping his character is mute/killed off immediately.

Where can I Watch Game of Thrones series 6 to catch up?
For those in the UK, the easiest way to watch series 6 of Game of Thrones is on Sky Atlantic. This is essentially the UK version of HBO, airing lots of its most popular shows this side of the pond. Sky also has all of the old episodes of GoT available to stream right now, if you have some serious catching up to do.
In the UK, if you don’t have the £32 per month Sky Q subscription for Sky Atlantic access, there is another cheaper way to watch Game of Thrones – choose a pay as you go plan.
Sky Now lets you pay for a month of access to all of its content, to stream over your internet connection in an all-you-can-eat fashion.
Sky Now is £6.99 a month with the TV Entertainment Pass that includes the Sky Atlantic channel. This also lets you use the catch up service so you can work your way through all the older episodes too. Plus it’s readily available via the Sky Now box, via a browser or using apps on PS3 and PS4, Xbox One, YouView, Roku, Chromecast and some LG Smart TVs.
If you’re in the US, or have means off accessing US sites, then you can use HBO Now which costs $15 per month and is for online-only viewing of the channel’s offerings.
What do we know about Game of Thrones series 8 so far?
Blimey, Charlie, you’re keen for info aren’t you? Series 8 of GoT won’t air until 2018 and contains just six episodes in total. It’s also the final series, as confirmed by the show’s creators.
