Thousands of drivers crash while perving on pedestrians

Up to a million UK drivers crash their cars after ogling attractive pedestrians, a new survey has found. Research by insurance company Direct Line claims distracted motorists cause 921,840 crashes per year — the equivalent of 2,525 every day — and many of these can be attributed to men and women not paying attention because they’re busy looking at sexy people.

Men are the worst offenders. 60 per cent of those blessed with exterior reproductive organs admitted to being distracted by attractive women. 12 per cent of women said an attractive man would divert their gaze from the road.

It’s not just the sight of genetically-lucky people that can be a problem. According to the survey, even the sight of a billboard with a pretty lady or bloke can be an issue. 21 per cent of respondents admitted it was also enough to temporarily suspend road concentration.

This sort of behaviour, Direct Line claims, is particularly common in the summer months where there is a bit more flesh on show than usual.

Direct Line spokesman Matt Owen said: “Stealing a quick look at an attractive pedestrian or billboard model may well be a bit of fun but, on a serious note, drivers shouldn’t underestimate that this type of distraction is a major contributing factor in road accidents.

“The number of crashes caused in this way have not changed year on year so drivers obviously are not learning to keep their eyes on the road,” he added.

One unlucky driver who was mesmerised by the sight of a pretty lady was charged for driving with undue care and attention, slapped with a £60 fine and had to attend four hours of driver awareness training.

“The girl had a very nice backside and I wanted to check out her face to see if it was as nice as her figure,” 26-year-old Doug Maclean said of his misdemeanour. “It’s what practically every bloke on the planet would do.”

Have you ever crashed as a result of witnessing a particularly stunning bottom? Did you then feign death in the hope the object of your eyeballing would then have to give you mouth to mouth resuscitation? Let us know about your close calls in the comments below.
