2014 Land Rover Discovery specs and pics revealed

Nearly a month after the 2014 Discovery was caught in the wild, Land Rover has been kind enough to spill the official beans ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt motor show.

The new Discovery is prettier and more efficient than ever.

Land Rover calls the new model a ‘refresh’, which seems apt. The 2014 model is unmistakably a Discovery, but look closely and you can see a number of aesthetic changes. For instance, the Land Rover badge of old has been replaced with Discovery and the number 4 has been dropped.

Other additions include a brand-spanking new grille, new front bumper, new headlamp design, two new alloy wheel designs to choose from and new daytime running LED lights.

Power comes from a 3.0-litre V6 diesel capable of producing 263PS and 600Nm of torque via a ZF eight-speed automatic. CO2 emissions have been reduced from 230g/km to 213g/km compared with the outgoing model and it’s also more fuel efficient at 35.3mpg. 0 to 62mph takes 8.8 seconds.

On the inside, Land Rover has included a few new options including Wade Sensing (a system that tells you how shallow or deep water levels are), Blind Spot Monitoring and Closing Vehicle Sensing (detection of vehicles coming up behind), Reverse Traffic Detection and T-Junction cameras.

You can also opt for a Meridian Surround sound system with 17 speakers and 380 watts of power if the standard 8-speaker variant is too quiet and you have a spare £4,000. Yes, you read that number right.

Those who want to pimp their Discovery can still upgrade to the Black Design Pack, which includes revised detailing and sizeable 20-inch black alloy wheels.

“The hugely popular Discovery continues to move from strength to strength and the addition of improvements in fuel economy and emissions underpins our commitment to delivering power with sustainability,”  Land Rover Global Brand Director, John Edwards explained. “As one of the world’s most stylish, capable and versatile SUVs, the Discovery is the perfect vehicle for people who enjoy living an active lifestyle to the full.”

The 2014 Discovery will arrive in the UK from ‘mid-November’. Pre-orders are open now, if you were interested. No word on a price just yet.
