2018 Jaguar F-Type: Meet the GoPro-enhanced sports car

The Jaguar F-Pace has been given a mid-life facelift. Here is what you need to know, including details of the 400 Sport launch edition, in-built GoPro technology and ReRun app.

If you had made a modern-classic and one that somehow managed to look nearly as good as the E-Type, would you change it too much? Probably not, which is why the 2018 F-Type revisions list is somewhat short. But what exactly is new and should you care? We were given full details ahead of its Detroit auto show unveiling – here is what we learned.

1) The F-Type now has something called Touch Pro

In keeping with the times, the infotainment system in the 2018 F-Type has been upgraded to work more like a smartphone. It now gets a touchscreen, hence the Touch Pro bit, as well an SSD hard drive to improve responsiveness (hard discs are so last year). It also boasts live traffic updates and weather reports so there is no excuse to forget that umbrella.

2) You can pair the 2018 F-Type with a GoPro camera

Does nobody believe you pulled off that epic drift (in a safe and private location, obviously)? Now you can film it using a GoPro Camera, thanks to a collaboration with the extreme sports camera manufacturer.

In conjunction with the bespoke ReRun app, you can combine real-time video with performance readings such as throttle position, gear selection and g-force and then download the video to a smartphone to share on social media. And then rake in the social media loving from friends, or perhaps a lot of unwanted banter.

3) The 2018 F-Type is a bit sleeker (but not much)

Though sparing, Jaguar has at least applied some aesthetic revisions to the latest F-Type. Model-specific bumpers give each one a unique look, while aluminium trim finishers and new interior colour schemes such as Siena Tan are said to make the cabin feel more special.

Meanwhile the front of the car has new LED headlights, which see the daytime running lights now double-up as indicators. In the case of the F-Type SVR, it gets bigger intakes than every other model, including the V8 R.

4) You can now buy an F-Type R-Dynamic…

The 2018 Jaguar F-Type now comes in two new flavours, 400 Sport and R-Dynamic. The former is a one-year special designed to celebrate the launch of the refreshed car and is powered by a supercharged 3.0-litre V6, with either 335bhp or 375bhp.

It also comes with 19-inch alloys, a new single air intake in the front bumper, choice of an automatic or manual transmission, rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, coupe or convertible and gloss black for the lip of the bumper, front splitter, bonnet vents, sills and diffuser.

5) And an F-Type 400 Sport Launch Edition…

The Jaguar F-Type 400 Sport, available for a year to celebrate the launch of the refreshed car, comes with a power hike to 394bhp, which is 400PS. Hence the name. To help tame the extra horses under the bonnet, the 400 Sport also gets 20-inch wheels in Dark Satin Grey, bigger brakes, limited-slip differential, switchable dampers and bespoke 400 Sport badges that contrast with the chosen paintjob, as you can hopefully see in the pictures.

6) The 2018 F-Type costs this much to buy

Ready for the UK price of every Jaguar F-Type? Here we go. The entry-level F-Type Coupe and Convertible, complete with the 340PS 3.0-litre V6, costs from £51,540. A choice of manual or auto is available, but no option of all-wheel drive..

Next up is the R-Dynamic Coupe, which starts from £55,150, then you have the F-Type 400 Sport, which costs from £70,115. Above that is the V8 R, priced from £89,980, and atop the range is the £110,000 SVR Mr Rory Reid drove to the Geneva Motor Show for Top Gear. Well, the old version anyway.

7) It goes on sale in the UK very soon

The first quarter of 2018 is when the new Jaguar F-Type goes on sale so best find a hammer to break open the piggy bank. Or wait patiently for our video review to see just how good it is. Not that Jaguar has really done anything to ruin it…
