A 577bhp Mercedes-AMG GT R is coming

The Mercedes-AMG GT R has been confirmed – and judging by reports it will be an absolute monster when it debuts at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2016.

Making the rear wheels turn will is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that has been tuned to produce 74bhp more than the highly capable AMG GT S, meaning it has a whopping 577bhp to play with, not to mention 516lb/ft (700Nm) of torque.

No wonder, then, 0-62mph takes a more spritely 3.6 seconds – two-tenths faster than the AMG GT S – and the top speed is 2mph shy of the big 200mph, an increase of 5mph.

Merc’s answer to the Porsche 911 will feature a transaxle transmission, revised aerodynamics, lightweight construction (carbon fibre, no doubt), more aggressive styling and a ‘substantially modified undercarriage’ so it’s not just about more power.

Mercedes has called the AMG GT R as the, “Best of the Green Hell”, which is a reference to the Nurburgring. No doubt an attempt at beating the Nissan GT-R’s time has been given the go-ahead, especially as both cars share the GTR moniker and that green paintjob is called ‘AMG green hell magno’.

The big reveal is scheduled for the 24th of June, 2016, so the wait will be short to see just how impressive Merc’s GT-R killer really is. In the meantime, why not watch Rory Reid drive the AMG GT S?
