Geneva Motor Show 2016: Audi is hoping to attract younger, trendier types with a brand new crossover known as the Q2, which arrives in the UK in July 2016.
The Q2 is the smallest of the Q family and the fourth car in the Q range. It measures 4.19 metres in length, 1.79 metres in width and 1.51 metres in height, making it 20cm smaller than the Q3 yet shares the A3’s 2.6-metre wheelbase.
Audi calls the Q2 a compact SUV and has designed it accordingly, giving it a 405-litre boot that extends up to 1,050 litres with the rear seats down, strong visibility and more ground clearance yet it has a low driver’s seat position so it should feel more like a saloon.
Other SUV-esque extras include an automatic tailgate so there’s no need to open or close it manually and a three-way split rear bench should make it easier to accommodate your latest Ikea haul.
Buyers will be able to choose between five engines, including a pint-sized 1.0-litre three-cylinder TFSI, two four-cylinder petrol engines (one a 1.4-litre and the other a 2.0-litre) and two four-cylinder diesels (1.6-litre and 2.0-litre).
All engines come with a six-speed manual as standard, with a seven-speed S tronic automatic available if changing gear the old way seems like too much hassle. Quattro all-wheel drive can be specced on the 150PS diesel and is standard on the 2.0 TFSI.
Bump-soaking duties are taken care of by semi-independent suspension on the rear for the front-wheel drive models and by four-link suspension for the quattros. Adaptive dampers, which allow the driver to adjust the characteristics of the Q2, are available as an option.
Audi has promised ‘many’ equipment packages, exterior paintjobs and interior colours to personalise your Q2, including an LED lighting package that illuminates the cabin.
17-inch alloy wheels are standard, upgradeable to 19 inches if you so desire, as is Audi’s MMI infotainment system, which includes a WiFi hotspot so you’re always a few seconds away from YouTube cat videos.
Audi is yet to declare a UK price, but at least you can order yourself a Q2 from July 2016 and then wait until November for the first batch of deliveries. Expect it to cost less than its larger Q3 sibling, which starts from £25,650.
