Pricing, images and specs of the BMW 2 Series (the replacement to the 1 Series) have been released ahead of its official unveiling at the Detroit motor show.
The 2 Series Coupé will come with a choice of three engines at launch. In the petrol corner there’s a four-cylinder 220i and an M235i six-cylinder, twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-litre. The latter delivers 321bhp ─ enough for a 0 to 62mph time of 5 seconds if you opt for the six-speed manual and 4.8 seconds with the optional eight-speed auto.
A 220d diesel will also be available at launch, with a 218d and 225d planned to arrive in May 2014.
As you may expect, the diesel is the most frugal choice, thanks to 58.9mpg and 124g/km of CO2 emissions, while the 220i manages 46.3mpg and 142g/km of CO2. The range-topping petrol isn’t to be sniffed at, however, thanks to 34.9mpg and 189g/km.
All models will have a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard with exception of the 225d, which gets the eight-speed automatic out of the box.
A choice of four trim levels – SE, Sport, Modern and M Sport – and a number of suspension options will be available, including the Adaptive M Suspension, which features electronically controlled dampers as found in the new BMW X5.
For a sportier feel there’s also the BMW M Performance suspension option that drops the ride height by 2cm and includes fancy red springs on bespoke dampers.
The BMW 2 Series arguably benefits from more aggressive styling than its replacement, which is a good thing, in our eyes. The 2 Series is 3cm wider, 7cm longer and has a 3cm longer wheelbase. This allows headroom to be 1.9cm better throughout the car and boot space is said to be 390 litres ─ an improvement of 20 litres.
Standard equipment is said to include air conditioning, rear parking sensors, automatic dimming rear view mirror, LED tail lights and a multi-function steering wheel.
A convertible BMW 2 Series is said to be on the cards. Rumours also suggest there will eventually be an option to upgrade to the xDrive four-wheel drive system.
The BMW 2 Series Coupé will go on sale on March 8th, 2014. It will cost £25,040, £25,865 and £34,250 for the 220i, 220d and the M235i, respectively.
Expect more details as we head to the Detroit motor show in January.
