BMW 4 Series Concept pictures reveal 3 Series coupe replacement

Rest in peace, 3 Series Beemer coupe. From late 2013, the two-door 3 Series will be replaced by the 4 Series Concept coupe, which is set to arrive in 2013, AutoCar reports.

The new 4 Series Beemer will replace the coupe version of the current 3 Series.
The new 4 Series Beemer will replace the coupe version of the current 3 Series.

The 4 Series Concept Coupe, set to be unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show next month, will be be 17mm longer than the current 3 Series saloon, 15mm wider and a significant 67mm lower. Combine those proportions with the in-your-face front and rear bumpers and an air dam big enough for bears to hibernate in, and you have a very aggressive, sporty proposition.

The apple may be new but it hasn’t fallen far from the 3 Series Coupe tree. The chrome kidney grille, bonnet and recognisable swage lines, or creases, running the length of the doors are reminiscent of those on the outgoing 3 Series coupe with a hint of 6-series. It strikes a nice balance, but whether it’s different enough to attract customers remains to be seen.

Power will be provided by engines already in the 3 Series range, according to an AutoCar source. Expect a number of petrols and diesels including the 435d and 435i, which supply enough grunt to put a smirk on most faces. Power should be funnelled through a choice of 8-speed ZF automatic or a 6-speed manual.

While still a concept, BMW has said the design will change very little in its journey to our roads, which means what you see in these official pictures is pretty much what you will get in showrooms. We can imagine the front and rear will be toned down slightly, but only to provide room to introduce a more aggressive M-badged version.

Speaking on its new creation, BMW told AutoCar: “The ‘4’ doesn’t just mark the start of a new cycle; it marks the start of a model with its own individual character and a stand-alone design.”

We’ll bring you more details including pricing and availability as soon as we have them.
