Like the BMW 1-Series but wish it was a little bigger and tougher? Well this BMW Concept Active Tourer might be the solution. Though it doesn’t actually exist at the moment, it does give us a curious hint at what a future BMW 1-Series Gran Turismo model could look like.
The Gran Turismo, or GT, suffix, in case you’re not up to speed, is applied to BMW cars that are a little bigger than the standard vehicles on which they are based. Case in point; the BMW 3-Series GT is a slightly pregnant 3-Series, just like the 5-Series GT can take a little extra junk (and passengers, and Ikea furniture) in its trunk.
The BMW Concept Active Tourer looks surprisingly sporty for something that is ostensibly designed to carry large, fleshy loads. The front end is as aggressive as any sports car in the BMW portfolio, it has a purposeful-looking wedge shape that implies it wants nothing more than to cut through the air at speed, and the rear – with exhausts outlets integrated into the rear apron – is a thing of beauty. That Gold Race Orange paintwork is stunning, too – kudos BMW.
The Concept Active Tourer is roughly six inches taller than the current BMW 1-Series, but it’s an inch shorter and its front and rear axles are an inch closer together, so we’re not expecting miracles where interior space is concerned. That said, BMW does at least promise lots of ‘clever details’ designed to make it the ideal companion for active recreational and sports enthusiasts, not least a carrier system for two bicycles integrated into the interior of the car.
The BMW Concept Active Tourer is one of an increasing number of future BWM models that will be front-wheel-drive. In this case the wheels are powered by a hybrid propulsion system consisting of a 1.5-litre petrol engine assisted by an electric motor, which gets its go from a set of batteries. The system promises an impressive 113mpg and CO2 emissions of less than 60g/km and can run on electric power alone for 12-19 miles.
The BMW Concept Active Tourer will go on show for the first time at the OutDoor Friedrichshafen fair from July 11 to 14. Take a look at some of the pics below.
