Cheaper UK driving licence fees announced

Good news, learner drivers. The provisional licence cost is being reduced online from £50 to £34 in the wake of a recent public consultation.

The government estimates the price cut, which comes into action from October 31st 2014, will save new drivers £82.2 million over the next ten years.

Renewing a driving licence – as required by law every ten years – will also be reduced from £20 to £14 as part of the government’s plan to give “savings back to the taxpayer”. A saving of £61.3 million has been estimated.

Businesses, meanwhile, will benefit from a drop in the fee for driver tachograph (used to monitor driver mileage) cards from £38 to £32 – a saving of £3.58 million over a decade.

Transport Minister Claire Perry said: “The cost of driving, especially for young drivers, can be significant and we are committed to cutting costs where we can.

“Thanks to DVLA making large scale savings to their running costs, we have been able to cut the cost of the driving licence which will save drivers and businesses £150 million over the next 10 years.”

The DVLA recently abolished the tax disc and took the process of taxing a vehicle online. Check out our guide to the changes here.
