You can buy all manner of tat from in-flight shopping brochures. Headphones, make-up, furniture and – as of now – cars. That’s right, a Chinese airline is preparing to launch an in-flight car dealership flogging new motors to people hurtling at hundreds of miles per hour 36,000 feet in the air.
The carrier in question, Spring Airlines, isn’t aimed at people with large disposable incomes. Quite the contrary, in fact. It’s China’s first and only budget airline and it gets most of its business from people trying to save, rather than splash, their cash. Despite this, airline bosses have decided planes are a great outlet to flog Chinese-branded cars with prices averaging in the region of 100,000 yuan (£10,769).
Naturally, Spring Airlines will have to train its cabin crew in the dark art of car salemanship. Each of the 500-plus employees will have to be fully au fait with the various models on offer so they can promote and sell the cars more effectively — no easy task.
There are also plenty of hurdles to overcome, such as how payment is handled. Would passengers have to fork out the full amount all at once? Will finance be offered? What cars are on sale? Will passengers be brave enough to buy a car on a whim whilst headed to or from holiday? Does the car qualify as duty free?
