Citroen DS 4 Crossback wades into crossover waters

Citroen has announced a facelift for the DS 4 and a brand new model called the DS 4 Crossback, both of which will go on sale in the UK from November and will be unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The DS 4 Crossback is designed to be more versatile than the standard DS 4, thanks to a higher seating position, 30mm higher ride height, more rugged styling, larger wheels, grey roof bars and a black rear spoiler.

The 2016 DS 4, meanwhile, has been given a facelift comprised new DS LED Vision headlights, extra exterior chrome trim, 45-degree panoramic windscreen and the new DS family front-end and its signature ‘DS Wings’ seen on the new DS 5.

In the UK there is a choice of six engines for the DS 4, all of which emit between 100 and 138g/km of CO2 and so are cheap to tax. The PureTech S&S is 9 per cent more powerful than its predecessor and has 230Nm of torque from 1,750rpm. Fuel economy and CO2 is 55.4mpg and 119g/km, respectively.

The most fuel efficient option is the BlueHDI 120 S&S six-speed manual, which offers a claimed 74.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 100g/km, dropping to 72.4mpg and 102g/km with the six-speed automatic EAT6 gearbox.

Those who want the DS 4 Crossback will have a choice of the aforementioned PureTech 130 petrol or the Blue HDi 120 S&S with either a manual or automatic and just the one trim level.

Apple fans will be pleased to know the DS 4 is the first Peugeot Citroen car to offer CarPlay, an infotainment system that hooks up with your iPhone to satisfy your navigation and entertainment needs. A 7-inch colour touchscreen is another new addition to the interior.

DS is separate from Citroen and caters for those who want a more premium car. As such, the DS 4, DS 4 Crossback and DS 5 all lack the Citroen badge. There have been 115,000 DS 4 sales since the car was launched in 2011. No word on a price for either model just yet.
