Ferrari 458 recalled because you could get stuck in the boot

Car recalls are more common these days, with certain manufacturers having to bring in millions of vehicles to rectify a problem. While most are fairly serious problems like brake failure or fire, some are downright odd.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in America is recalling all Ferrari 458 Italia and Spider models manufactured between the 5th of March, 2010 and 20th of May, 2013 because someone in the front trunk storage space might find it difficult to escape.

Exactly why one would end up locked in the front compartment of their own car is unclear. Nor do we know how anyone larger than a pencil would fit. But apparently the problem is enough for 3,082 examples of the £200,000 supercar to warrant a brand new part that rectifies the issue.

“The secondary latch for the front trunk storage compartment may not release when the vehicle is stationary. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 401, ‘Interior Trunk Release’,” the NHTSA notice explained.

“In the event an individual is trapped in the trunk and the latch system does not release the trunk lid, it increases the risk of personal injury or possibly death,” it added.

Luckily for Ferrari owners (who aren’t still trapped), the fix is free and easy. Apparently you need only head to your nearest dealer and they will do the rest.

Ferrari recently unveiled a brand new 458 known as the Speciale A. Just 499 examples of the 596bhp, bright yellow open-top will be built.
