Fiat will do battle with the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Mini Countryman with the 500X. We headed to the Italian city of Milan to see if the bug-eyed crossover has what it takes to compete.
Take out the rather likable Fiat 500L Trekking from the equation and you can argue Fiat struggles to make a big car you would want to be seen in. But it was only a matter of time before the Italian manufacturer injected some of that 500 supermini charm into a more practical and spacious vehicle.
That vehicle is the 500X, a blown up 500 with off-roading prowess, more cabin space and a much bigger boot. 350 litres of boot space, in fact, which means you can go crazy with the shopping.
Making a car less ugly than the 500L was never going to be difficult, but making one that makes you smile and one that gets a seal of improvement from a curious Italian pedestrian we encountered on our travels? Not so easy, but Fiat has done the job.
Like with all Fiats, there are a few quirks here and there. For one thing, there are public libraries with more character than the Cross model’s interior. But, as they say, it’s the imperfections we learn to love, which partly explains why the 500X is quite possibly the best car the manufacturer has made in a long time.
