French artist Natacha Mercier covers old Merc in 100,000 dead flies

A French artist has covered a Mercedes-Benz in dead flies. Natacha Mercier coated the old Benz in squares of fly paper, parked it in a greenhouse and released 100,000 flies to do what they do best. The soon to be dead insects got themselves trapped on the fly paper et voila — Mercier had created a work of automotive art.

This, believe it or not, is art.
This, believe it or not, is art.

Obviously this begs the question: why? Natacha says she was inspired to create the disease-ridden abomination when back in 2007 she saw a gold chain-rocking, white-suit wearing BMW owner pull up, get out of the car and spit-polish a spot on his chrome wheels. Mercier said the girls around him (her included) were “dropping like flies”.

Years later, she decided to flip the ‘dropping like flies’ thing on its head by creating this frankly horrible creation.

As much as we hate it, there’s no denying it is in fact art. There’s skill and imagination in the thing, and it has proved a huge talking point wherever Natacha has presented it for public viewing. The thing turns heads in a major way. People gawk, open-mouthed as it’s driven through city streets and some chase it to snap pictures to capture the horror.

There’s even a moment in the film when the driver, a man dressed in a white t-shirt and baseball cap, gets out to give the wheels a spit polish but unfortunately for him there are no women on hand to swoon — they’re all too busy dry heaving in disgust.

We’ve embedded two videos below that show the car being created and then being driven around, possibly spreading diseases everywhere it travels. Grab a bucket, watch it and let us know what you think in the comments below.
