Hands-on with the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S

2015 Detroit motor show: You know that half coupe, half SUV GLE thing we were banging on about at the end of 2014? Well, Mercedes has announced an AMG version of it. Be afraid.

The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe comes in two forms, both of which pack a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 underneath the hood. The more powerful ‘S’ variant creates 577bhp and 560lb/ft of torque, enough for a 0 to 62mph of 4.2 seconds and a likely limited top speed of 155mph.

The slightly odd, BMW X6-esque proportions may upset your eyes, but it means there’s more space to swing a cat. Or just savour the ample leg room on offer, if you prefer.

Up front is a sporty interior with some carbon effect bits here and there to make your passengers swoon. Meanwhile Merc and AMG’s impressive build quality and attention to detail should make every journey a comfortable, if frightening, experience.

There are a few clever extras that make will undoubtedly make the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupe a force to be reckoned with, but we’ll let Rory tell you about that in the video below these very words.
