Honda provides glimpse of next-generation Civic

Honda has released a teaser of the next-generation Civic ahead of the debut of a prototype at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.

The sketch of the Civic Hatchback Prototype shows the design direction the all-new hatchback Civic model will take before it is released in Europe in 2017 and then other ‘global markets’ such as the US.

The Civic saloon is already on sale in the US and there are design similarities between it and the sketch, including those angular rear lights, except the sketch shows something more aggressive, thanks to a twin-exit exhaust in the centre of rear bumper.

Honda says the 10th-generation Civic will be produced at its Swindon plant. It will, in fact, become the only global source for the Civic, with a £200million investment earmarked to help with production of the new vehicle. CR-V production will be moved to Canada.

The new Civic is built upon a new platform that is already being used for the model in the US. It is said to be 25 per cent stiffer than the previous generation’s equivalent and features independent rear suspension.

A number of engines will be available, including the 1.5-litr turbo petrol already available in the US, a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol and the 1.6-litre diesel currently available.

Honda will also use the Geneva Motor Show to give the Clarity Fuel Cell car its European debut, having been unveiled at the Tokyo motor show in October 2015. The Clarity Fuel Cell can seat five passengers and has a range of up to 435 miles.

Honda’s press conference will take place on the 1st of March so stay tuned for the new Civic reveal.
