Is this Fiat-inspired Smeg the coolest Fridge ever?

Got a wad of cash in your pocket and a burning desire to blow it on retro automotive-inspired art pieces? Fiat’s seen you coming. The company has teamed up with appliance guru Smeg and Italian design house Italia Independent, to create a refrigerator inspired by the iconic Fiat 500.

Most refrigerators are pretty dull, following a mantra of function over form, but even we, as fashion morons, can appreciate this thing. It’s designed to resemble the front of a car, for goodness sake. Plus it’ll keep your beer cool and prevent last night’s takeaway from going bad. Where do we sign up?

The ‘bonnet’ lid (the engine on the original car actually lived in the rear) hides a pair of sliding glass doors. Beneath these is a 100 litre refrigerator bay with a dedicated shelf for cans and 3 removable bottle holders. It’s almost as if it was designed for booze.

Unlike the car that inspired it, you won’t have to worry about nasty emissions from the Smeg 500 Fridge. The unit has an A+ energy rating and consumes just 115kWh per year. It has an adjustable thermostat, automatic defrosting and makes just 42dB of noise, so it can be installed in any room that has an 83x125x80cm gap begging to be filled.

More important, though, is the fact it looks bloody awesome – even if you aren’t a fan of the Fiat 500’s design. Head on over to www.fiat500design.com to buy one for yourself.
