Is this the fastest Range Rover Sport ever?

Range Rover Sport SVR confirmed by Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations Division.

Short and sweet. That’s Jaguar Land Rover’s marketing approach to what is likely to be the fastest Range Rover ever ─ and boy has it whet our appetite. Three short videos of the mystery machine being put through its paces hint at performance credentials beyond that of the Range Rover Sport.

Exact details are likely to remain under wraps ahead of the Range Rover Sport SVR’s debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but we know the Special Operations Division means business. Just check out the Project 7 F-Type for proof.

We also understand it will be known as the SVR and not the RS as previously rumoured. Why? Because Jaguar Land Rover said so.

The Range Rover Sport SVR will have the 542hp 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol engine found in the Jaguar XKR-S and XJR, assuming internet consensus is correct. That means 39bhp more than you get in the current Range Rover Sport.

All that power on tap would give the throaty-sounding new Range Rover Sport a 0 to 62mph time of less than five seconds and a top speed of 165mph. It’s likely a host of track-focussed extras such as bigger brakes, revised suspension and a touch of weight-saving will further add to the pace.

Reports say an aggressive bodykit, revised air vents and quad exhaust pipes will help the Sport SVR stand out, while a suitably comfortable interior with leather and sporty detailing will keep you comfortable as you hurtle through the countryside. Or sit outside waiting to pick the kids up.

Anyone who has driven a Range Rover Sport V8 will know it’s one thirsty cat and so the SVR will probably drink fuel like it’s going out of fashion. Not that anyone will buy a gigantic 4×4 to save the planet.

If the Sport SVR seems a bit too much for you, there’s always the option of the recently announced Stealth Pack.

Goodwood starts on June 26th so the wait for full details should be short-lived. We’ll keep you posted. Until then, three teaser videos of the Sport SVR in testing at the Nurburgring circuit in West Germany await.
