Focus may now be on the ‘holy trinity’ of hypercars, but Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg says it can more than match its Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche rivals.
Speaking on its website, Koenigsegg said of the current battle between the McLaren P1, Porsche 918 Spyder and Ferrari LaFerrari: “Does it trouble Koenigsegg that we’re not included in tests like these. That we’re not included in the #HolyTrinity that publications are writing about so much?
“Not really. Well, not until such a time as it troubles any of our customers.”
With nearly 3,000hp between the competition, Koenigsegg is poking a trio of rather large bears, but then it has a few cars up its sleeves that can take the heat. For instance, the One:1 (named because it has one horsepower per kilogram of weight) can go from 0-186mph in 11.922 seconds.
Then there’s the Agera R, which is said to be capable of a 0-186mph time of 14.53 seconds, beating the LaFerrari, P1 and 918 times of 15 seconds, 16.5 seconds and 19.9 seconds, respectively.
Did we mention the Regera hybrid? Powered by a 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and three electric motors, this monster is said to be capable of 0-250mph in fewer than 20 seconds. Its mid-range acceleration is good, too, with 93-155mph taking just 3.2 seconds.
Guess that peak torque of 2,000Nm and up 1,800hp comes in handy, eh?
Even with a formidable arsenal at its disposal, Koenigsegg was quick to acknowledge the holy trinity is the real deal. It added: “All three are beautifully executed cars that carry a lot of technology in them.”
The sentiment was short-lived, mind you. “Acceleration is only one aspect of performance car ownership. We just wanted to demonstrate to our customers and fans that our vehicles lose no ground when compared against this lofty competition.”
There have been a number of tests featuring the holy trinity squaring up against each other – and the unofficial tally suggests the McLaren P1 is the king (although most who have driven them all will admit you ideally need to own them all). But not anything from Koenigsegg.
Until 2016, that is. “We know that everyone is waiting for us to tackle the Nürburgring.” That’s when the speed restrictions are lifted and one of Koenigsegg’s bonkers creations can prove whether it really is the king. We can hardly wait.
