The Nurburgring has claimed a Koenigsegg One:1 hypercar in what is potentially the most expensive crash the circuit has ever seen.
The 1,341hp Koenigsegg One:1 – named so because it has 1hp for every kg of weight – is the latest of many cars to take on the legendary Green Hell in Germany and lose.
There are now just six Koenigsegg One:1 cars and one prototype in existence. Given that each one is worth around 2.8million euros, this has to be one of the most expensive crashes at the Nurburgring outside of motorsport.
A Motor Authority photographer is said to have witnessed the crash. Apparently the One:1 went into a corner too fast and was unable to slow down enough to avoid ploughing into the barrier, which would make total sense knowing Koenigsegg is out to set a new lap record.
ABS failure has been speculated as a cause, while some YouTube viewers think it has too much power for a rear-wheel drive car. Its competitors, the ‘Holy Trinity’ comprised the Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder all use all-wheel drive systems.
The incident happened during Industry Pool track testing at the Adenauer Forst section of the track. It is actually Koenigsegg’s second crash at the ‘ring, the first of which took place in its Agera hybrid hypercar in 2014.
The photographer said Koenigsegg plans to rebuild the One:1. As for the driver, he was reportedly taken to hospital for an assessment and out in the afternoon so nothing serious. Scroll on down for a video of the aftermath but, sadly, not the crash itself.
Guess the Porsche 918 Spyder – one of the current record holders – can sleep easy for a while until Koenigsegg makes its return.
