Lewis Hamilton caught using his iPhone at the wheel

Lewis Hamilton has landed himself in a spot of trouble after being caught using a mobile phone while driving.

A photograph shows the three-time Formula world champion using his iPhone while driving a Mercedes sports utility vehicle one-handed into a car park in Abu Dhabi.

The 30-year-old only managed to land himself in trouble two weeks ago when he crashed his purple £1.5 million Pagani Zonda into three parked cars in Monaco. The incident happened after a ‘heavy night of partying’, which caused a momentary lapse in concentration.

Local police breathalised Hamilton at the scene and the result came back negative. A lack of sleep, rather than intoxication, was to blame for the ‘light contact’ with the stationary cars.

A spokesman for the Monaco Palais de Justice confirmed the lack of booze involved: “Mr Hamilton’s foot slipped on the brake and clutch pedals and his vehicle struck three parked cars. He was tested for alcohol but the result was negative.”

He added that he would be fit and well for the Brazilian Grand Prix, which he finished in second place behind team-mate Nico Rosberg.

“I am a bit run down after heavy partying and not much rest for a week and a half. I have been non-stop and trying to fit training in at the same time and not getting a lot of sleep,” he explained.

Hamilton – who lives in Monaco – was crowned world champion with three races to go.
