Mercedes-Benz SL-Class range given the AMG Sport treatment

Mercedes has given its entry-level SL-Class models a bit of a spruce-up. Both the SL 350 and SL 500 will be offered with an AMG Sport badge and all the added goodness that entails.

It means both models now get a hefty shot of luxury, standard equipment and aesthetic changes out of the box, including an electric glass sunroof and Parktronic with Active Park Assist, so the droptop mercs can parallel park themselves with virtually no user input.

The SL 350 and SL 500 AMG Sport both get arch-filling 19-inch AMG alloy wheels and sports suspension, which lowers ride height by 10mm and improves handling.

Rounding off the package is an AMG body kit to improve the looks, a body-coloured boot lip, a new 7g-Tronic Plus transmission with modified shift points added to the S Mode and – for the SL 350 model-only – upgraded brakes with perforated rear discs and grey brake calipers with Mercedes-Benz lettering.

Mercedes has also made changes to the SL 63 AMG, which benefits from an electric panoramic glass sun roof and the aforementioned Parktronic with Active Park Assist. The SLS, meanwhile, now comes with perforated leather sports seats, a chequered flag instrument cluster, AMG floor mats, black fabric roof lining and smatterings of Platinum White Pearl piping throughout the interior.

No changes have been made to the SL 65 AMG. Mercedes-Benz has left the engines in the range unfettled, too, so you can expect the same excellent performance as you make your way up the range.

Should you wish to make your new AMG Merc more personal, there’s now a choice of five metallic paints and one non-metallic. You can also opt for Black Ash Wood for the dash and Bengal Red or Porcelain nappa leather for the upholstery just in case the now standard light brushed aluminium and black leather proves a bit tame for you.

The Mercedes SL 350 AMG Sport, SL 500 AMG Sport and the SL 63 AMG will start at £69,960, £79,970 and £110,785 on the road, respectively, and will be available from June 2013.
