New Audi A5 and S5 are lighter, larger and leaner

Audi has revealed the new A5 Coupe and its faster S5 variant ahead of their November 2016 release in the UK.

The new Audi A5 Coupe is said to have undergone ‘an artfully crafted styling evolution’ designed to bring it up to date, including widening and flattening the singleframe. New LED rear lights and front Matrix LED headlights, both optional, have also been added.

By using a different underlying platform, Audi has managed to save 60kg compared to the old car. Meanwhile the drag coefficient has been reduced to 0.25, further improving efficiency.

Five engines will be available at launch in the UK, including two TFSI petrol lumps and three TDI diesels, with power ranging from 190PS to 286PS. In the range-topping S5, expect a turbocharged V6 that develops 354PS and hits 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds.

The four-cylinder engines and 3.0-litre TDI can be partnered with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed S tronic, while the top diesel with 286PS and the S5 get an eight-speed tiptronic and quattro all-wheel drive as standard.

Audi has made the two-door A5 Coupe bigger and added a longer wheelbase, giving passengers more head, leg and elbow room. The boot is also 10 litres bigger, at 465 litres, and can be opened by using your foot with an optional extra.

Spec Audi connect and a permanent SIM-card ensures the A5 and S5 are connected at all times so you can make the most of Apple Car Play, Android Auto and the rest of the infotainment options, providing you are happy to pay the flate rate for a data plan.

A digital display in the form of a 12.3-inch TFT display behind the steering wheel can be specced in addition to the 8.3-inch monitor in the centre console. Greater luxury can be had in the form of a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Safety has been enhanced, too, in the form of Stop&Go adaptive cruise control, park assist, cross traffic assist rear, collision avoidance assist, turn assist and camera-based recognition of traffic signs.

A more impressive range of standard equipment rounds off the new A5 Coupe, including LED interior lights, LED daytime running lights, Audi MMI radio plus with a seven-inch MMI colour display, Bluetooth / USB connectivity and a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel.

The new Audi A5 Coupe will launch in the winter of 2016. UK pricing is yet to be confirmed, we will keep you posted.
