Woman drives over man’s head after pub dispute

A woman was handed a 10-month jail sentence after boozing it, jumping behind the wheel and running over a person’s head.

Reports say 24-year-old Abigail Ratcliff got into a dispute with fellow pub-goers at the Harrier pub in Tipton, Dudley in the West Midlands, before heading to her car with a male passenger. After struggling to get out of her space for ‘a good few minutes’ (according to prosecutor Simon Phillips) Ratcliff drove at a crowd of people outside the venue.

At this point, the unnamed passenger got out and started punching an 18-year-old to the ground. “The vehicle then reversed over him. It actually reversed over his head,” Mr Phillips told the court.

Ratcliff decided to return to the scene to drive over the victim’s legs before speeding off again.

The unnamed victim suffered multiple abrasions and bruising to the side of his head and face. He is also said to now suffer from headaches since the incident, spends less time socialising in pubs and is fearful of cars.

Ratcliff is said to have rang 999 six times to report her vehicle stolen, presumably to try and cover up her tracks. Police later found the car burnt out.

She pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm, dangerous driving, attempting to pervert the course of justice and driving with excess alcohol.

The mother of two said she was sorry for what she had done and asked for a suspended sentence because of her children.

“You drove in a way that it was almost inevitable that injury was going to be caused,” judge Michael Dudley said in court. “By some miracle they were not serious injuries.”
