Put your hands together for the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class saloon

Mercedes-Benz has revealed full details of the new E-Class saloon, including the engines on offer, efficiency, standard equipment and, of course, the UK price in the wake of its 2016 Detroit motor show debut.

Initially the new Mercedes E-Class saloon will come with a choice of two engines, a 2.0-litre bi-turbo E 220 d that has 195hp and 400Nm of torque and a six-cylinder E 350 d that outputs 258hp and 620Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to a 96-Tronic automatic gearbox as standard.

The E 220 d is said to be capable of 72.4mpg, 102g/km of CO2, 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds (0.4 seconds faster than the outgoing E 250 CDI). Meanwhile the E 350 d manages 55.4mpg, 133g/km and 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds.

That makes the E 350 d 27hp more powerful, 80Nm more torquey, 0.9 seconds faster, 48g/km more CO2 efficient and 14.5mpg better than its E 350 CDI predecessor.

A petrol-electric hybrid E 350 e will be added later in 2016, complete with 279hp, 600Nm of torque, 134.5mpg and CO2 emissions of just 49g/km.

Just Two trim levels are available. SE offers a Garmin Map Pilot navigation system with an 8.4-inch display, Parktronic parking sensors with reversing camera, Park Pilot self-parking system, Collision Prevention Assist Plus autonomous emergency braking, 64-colour LED interior lighting, two-zone automatic climate control, three-spoke multifunction steering wheel with dual touchpads, leather upholstery with heated front seats, LED headlights and tailights, electrically folding door mirrors and 17-inch wheels. Quite a lot, then.

Step up to AMG Line and you get 19-inch alloy wheels, AMG exterior bodykit, perforated front brake discs, three-spoke AMG steering wheel and Artico leather and Dynamica microfiber upholstery with the seat comfort package.

Standard equipment on the E 350 d also includes Air Body Control multi-chamber air suspension, Comand satellite navigation with a 12.3-inch display and remote online services (this extra costs £1,495 on the E 220 d).

For a slightly more plush experience, buyers can opt for the £2,795 Premium and £3,895 Premium Plus packages, the former comprising of a panoramic roof, Keyless Start and a front-seat memory package, and the latter a 590-watt 13-speaker Burmester surround sound system with a nine-channel amplifier and Multibeam LED intelligent light system.

There’s also a Driving Assistance Package that includes Drive Pilot, a cleaver feature that allows the E-Class to follow the car in front at a set distance and, where necessary, drop the speed for speed cameras.

Orders are available now, with prices starting from £35,935 for the entry-level E 220 d SE rising to £47,225 for the E 350 d. First deliveries will begin from May 2016. No word on a price for the hybrid just yet.

With S-Class-inspired looks and a hefty roster of technological goodies, the new E-Class executive cruiser could give the jaguar XF and BMW 5 Series a run for their money. Expect our review later in the year.
