Richard Hammond ‘fine’ after motorbike accident in Mozambique

Richard Hammond has been involved in a crash during filming of season 2 of The Grand Tour, except this time he was able to let the world know he is alive and well himself.

The ex-Top Gear presenter, who now hosts The Grand Tour alongside Jeremy Clarkson and James May, told concerned fans he is “fine” after falling off his motorbike while shooting for season 2 in Mozambique, Africa.

Clarkson told the Sun newspaper that Hammond had “hurt himself quite badly”, but exact details of the crash are being kept under wraps so as to avoid spoiling the show. An unverified report suggests Hammond was knocked unconscious.

47-year-old Hammond confirmed the news on the motoring community website DriveTribe in a post titled ‘I’ve checked and I’m not dead’.

“It’s true,” he said. “I did fall off a motorbike whilst filming recently for The Grand Tour in Mozambique.

“I banged my head, yes, along with pretty much everything else apart from my left thumb, which remains un-bruised. Can’t tell you more yet about the how and why of it, that’s all for later in the year on the show.”

Jokingly referring to his famous dragster crash in 2016, which nearly killed him, he added: “As for injuries; well put it this way, I don’t think I can get a book out of it.”

Hammond actually described the crash as a “slight shunt” in an earlier tweet, which is in stark contrast to the two-week coma that came as a result of losing control of a ‘Vampire’ dragster at 288mph during filming for Top Gear.

An anonymous witness who claims to have seen the crash was less blasé about it. Speaking to Grand Tour Nation, the source said Hammond was travelling “quite fast” and that it caused “instant horror” among the crew because of the remote setting and lack of facilities available.

The source added: “The lads are known for having a laugh on set but Richard’s previous accident is still fresh in their minds. They were all shaken by the latest incident.”
