Few people can claim to be as cool as Steve McQueen, but you can at least try to be with one of the last cars he owned before his untimely death.
His 1976 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera (aka the 930) – the last car he special-ordered before he died of cardiac arrest in 1980 aged 50 – is being auctioned by Mecum on the 13th to 15th of August in Monterey, California.
Like with other cars owned by Steve McQueen, this particular Porsche is anything but stock. It has, for example, a Slate Grey paintjob, sunroof, dual mirrors, black sport seats and a limited-slip differential.
Other modifications were made after delivery, as son Chad McQueen explained. “My dad had little things done to it. Like on the dashboard, he had a switch put on so it would kill the rear lights in case he was being chased on Mulholland Drive.”
Chad added: “This car is rich in history. This is the last of the McQueen cars, really. That’s known. That’s real.” McQueen ordered car the car from Bob Smith Porsche in Hollywood.
Underneath the German bonnet is a rare early-production non-intercooled 3.0-litre that outputs 234hp at 5,500rpm mated to a four-speed gearbox and a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injector.
The buyer will receive all the usual documentation including the original owner’s manual, original tools and even the original sales brochures. A portion of the proceeds will go to Boys Republic, a reform school McQueen attended that aims to keep troubled kids out of jail and on the straight and narrow.
A number of other famous names have owned the McQueen 930, including movie producer and writer Floyd Mutrux and actor Dean Paul Martin, son of the singer Dean Martin.
Steve McQueen famously starred in The Great Escape and Bullitt, the latter famous for its lengthy San Francisco chase scene involving two iconic V8 American muscle cars.
Given the pedigree of the car and the fact it’s a classic Porsche, you will need to do more than just break open the piggy bank to afford it. Give Mecum a buzz if you have a lot of disposable income.
