Lego has officially unveiled its latest petrolhead-focussed toy at Caterham’s headquarters in crawley, West Sussex.
The Lego Caterham Seven is based on the top of the range 620R, which in real life can go from 0-62mph in under three seconds. 771 pieces make up the toy, which will be available to buy in from the 1st of October for £69.
Lego created the final design but it was a Lego enthusiast who originally came up with the design, which was submitted to Lego Ideas and managed to secure the 10,000 votes needed to go into production.
Although Carl Greatix’s original design was impressive (it had, for example, working steering), Lego had to make various modifications to ensure it passes its quality control checks, including a stability test.
The result is 28cm long, 10cm wide Caterham Seven immortalised in Lego, complete with a removable nose cone, steering wheel, opening boot, functioning axle stand so the wheels can be removed and a removable engine cover.
Caterham chief commercial officer David Ridley said: “Caterham has always prided itself on producing bespoke, hand-built cars for its customers.
“Our army of fans who build their own Caterham Sevens are equally discerning when it comes to the detail and craftsmanship which is central to Caterham, and we worked closely with the LEGO team to ensure the LEGO model replicated that.
“The LEGO 620R has various unique features – the intricately-designed engine was certainly a surprise when we lifted the bonnet for the first time. It’s really satisfying to know that fans can recreate and build their own 620R with LEGO bricks.”
The real Caterham 620R costs from £49,995 and is powered by a 2.0-litre that outputs 310bhp. In a car that weighs half a tonne, performance is pokey to put it very mildly.
A more road-friendly version known as the 620S was later announced in January 2016, which added more luggage space and softened the experience.
