The new Peugeot 3008 wants you to forget about other crossovers

Peugeot has announced a new version of the 3008, which features more interior space, more technology goodies and a bolder design.

The Peugeot 3008 is only 80mm longer and 17mm wider than its predecessor and has the same height yet offers 24mm, and 36mm improvements in leg, elbow and headroom, thanks to an 80mm longer wheelbase.

Boot space is also bigger in the French crossover, taking the total up by nearly 90 litres to 520. Fold the seats flat, remove the luggage cover and space increases to 1,580 litres. A hands-free tailgate operated by swiping your foot under the rear bumper is available.

Revisions to the 3008 have helped it shed an average of 100kg in weight, including the use of Ultra High Strength Steel, a thermoplastic boot floor and aluminium wings. This, Peugeot claims, helps improve fuel economy and vehicle dynamics.

Four petrol engines and five diesels are available for the Nissan Qashqai and Hyundai Tucson competitor, ranging from a 1.2-litre PureTech 130 S&S with a six-speed manual to a 1.6-litre THP 165 S&S with a six-speed automatic.

As for the diesel, there’s an entry-level 1.6-litre BlueHDi 100 S&S mated to a five-speed manual and a top-spec 2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 S&S with a six-speed automatic and three options in between.

For those who regularly have to brave busy city commutes, Peugeot offers a folding scooter called the e-Kick and a folding bike called the e-Bike, both of which have electric assistance and can be recharged while sitting in a ‘dockstation’ in the boot.

The 3008 will be the first to feature Peugeot’s latest version of i-Cockpit with Amplify, which lets the driver change the level of ambient lighting and control the multi-point massage functionality built into the seats.

It even has an in-built fragrance diffuser so you and your passengers can get a whiff of ‘Cosmic Leather’, ‘Aerodrive’ or ‘Harmony Wood’ fragrances at a choice of three levels of intensity instead of the wet dog in the back.

Other new technologies include Active Safety Brake and Distance Alert, which warns you of an impending collision and then uses automatic emergency braking if you fail to react in time.

The car also monitors your trajectory to ensure you aren’t too tired and has Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop function to make driving in traffic less hassle and Park Assist, which parks the 3008 ‘with minimum input from the driver’.

The new Peugeot 3008 sports utility vehicle will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show in September 2016 before opening for UK orders from November ahead of its January 2017 onward delivery date. Expect pricing details later in the year.
