Meet the gorgeous new Mazda MX-5

Hairdressers (and fans of lightweight, affordable sports cars) take note; Mazda has revealed the new all-new MX-5 and it’s a thing of beauty.

It’s less weedy than the outgoing model, with narrow, angular headlights and a wide grille giving it a slightly sinister appearance. The front and rear wheel arches bulge aggressively, giving it a muscular appearance, while the rear is suitably wide, indicating it’s built very much with performance in mind.

The new Mazda MX-5 takes advantage of Mazda’s fancy Skyactive technology, which incorporates lightweight materials and efficient engines. It makes extensive use of aluminium, particularly on the bonnet, boot lid, front wings and bumper mountings, all of which gives it a lower centre of gravity, while helping it shed an impressive 100kg in comparison to the outgoing MX-5.

It’s 105mm shorter than the previous car, as well as 10mm wider and 10mm lower, with a lower bonnet and thinner windscreen surround, which should aid visibility. Arguably more importantly, Mazda has moved its engine further back towards the cabin in order to aid front to rear weight distribution

Mazda has yet to release performance stats, but it is expected the new MX-5 will feature a range of four-cylinder Skyactiv engines, based on those that already feature in the company’s other vehicles – though we expect they’ll be optimised for better performance.

Six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes are expected to be available.

Inside, Mazda promises a more modern, stylish interior, with a touch-screen infortainment display, while a fabric roof will grace standard models.

The new Mazda MX-5 will go on sale in Spring 2015 with prices starting at less than £20,000.
