Video: Volvo XC60 defies expectations

Everybody knows Volvos are predictable; safe, sturdy, boxy – ultimately unspectacular, but good. Take the XC60, for which we’ve just shot a video review. You almost don’t need to watch it, right? You can pretty much guess what you’re going to get. But if you are of this opinion then you might want to think again because the XC60 defies convention in may ways.

The first-generation Volvo XC60 wasn’t the most stylish or curvaceous model on the market, but this latest model has been facelifted to make it a far more compelling proposition. It’s styling is more muscular, contemporary and befitting of the urban environments in which it’s so likely to be used.

The Volvo XC60’s interior has been reworked, too. It’s by no means as fancy as some of its rivals, but it’s well-designed, well laid out and spacious, with lots of cool technology including a Web browser, sat-nav and streaming audio services. Interior space, as you’d guess, is relatively plentiful.

Arguably the best thing about the new XC60 is the fact it can be hooked up to Volvo’s new D4 engine. This unit offers a staggeringly impressive blend of performance and low running costs – up to 181bhp and as little as 117g/km of CO2 with 57mpg. And it’ll still haul this hulk of a thing from 0-62mph in under 9 seconds.
