Volvo XC90 SUV chucks 400bhp and saves the planet

Volvo combine zero emissions and amazing performance in new XC90 seven-seater SUV.

It’s been 12 years since the first version of the Volvo XC90 was released and at the turn of the year the company will launch a new version. The latest XC90 promises to deliver an outstanding blend of low emissions and high performance, particularly in the flagship T8 Twin Engine version, which uses a four-cylinder, two-litre, supercharged and turbocharged engine with plug-in hybrid assist.

With the T8, Volvo has managed to cut CO2 emissions to around 60 grams per kilometre while delivering 400bhp with 600Nm of torque — not bad at all for a seven-seater.

The top-of-the-range XC90 T8 Twin Engine’s dual charged engine sends its power to the front wheels, while an 80bhp electric motor drives the back wheels. A dedicated set of batteries means the XC90 will do about 25 miles of pure electric driving.

Peter Mertens, of Volvo Car Group, says: “Since our new Scaleable Product Architecture (SPA) technology is designed from the start to accommodate electrification technologies, the Twin Engine installation does not compromise luggage or passenger space.”

There are two less powerful, less advanced yet still efficient engines planned. These include the 187bhp D4, which returns 74.3mpg economy and emits 99g/km of CO2, and the 242bhp T5 petrol, which claims 47.9mpg and 137g/km.

Earlier in the year, Volvo released images of the XC90’s cabin. There’s a tablet-like touchscreen control console, making the new infotainment system virtually button free.

The XC90 is expected to have the very latest in-car safety technologies, mindful of Volvo’s Vision Zero objective of ensuring nobody is killed or seriously injured in one of its cars.

Luxurious touches, such as a dark flame birch wood dash and diamond cut controls should help the big Volvo compete with other high end rivals. Prices are expected to start from £40,000. More on this as we get it.
