VW GTI Roadster becomes a 500bhp reality

Bonkers VW GTI Roadster concept from Gran Turismo 6 to be on show at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Anyone who attends the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed gathering will be able to see a real-world version of the Volkswagen GTI Roadster originally designed for Sony PlayStation 3 racing game Gran Turismo 6.

VW announced it had turned polygons into something you can actually drive back in May. The concept measures 4,148mm length, 1,894mm width and 1,090mm height, making it longer, lower and considerably wider than a road-going GTI.

The two-seater GTI Roadster concept is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 bi-turbo TSI engine. Peak power is 503PS (496bhp) and 560Nm (413lb/ft) of torque, with 500Nm available from just 2,000rpm. 0 to 62mph takes as little as 3.6 seconds and the top speed is an unhealthy 190mph.

Traction comes from 4Motion four-wheel drive plus 8.5 x 20-inch wheels at the front and 9.5 x 20-inch wheels at the rear wrapped in grippy rubber, while carbon ceramic brakes are tasked with bringing all 1,420kg to a halt on command. A seven-speed DSG gearbox takes care of gear changes.

The Gran Turismo Red paintjob is said to make the car look fast even when at a standstill. Inside you can find black and anthracite seats with contrasting GTI red stitching. There are also five-point harnesses to keep you from being left behind when you press the accelerator and unleash hell.

The VW GTI Roadster, which is said to be based on the VW Design Vision GTI, will be available as a digital download in Gran Turismo 6 from mid-June. Reports say a few lucky people will be able to drive it up the hill at Goodwood at the end of June.
