A quick heads up; this week’s Broadband Rollout Roundup comes with a few leftovers from the tail end of 2012. As BT’s workforce has been busy contending with the elements over the seasonal period, rollout news from Openreach has been a little thin on the ground so far.
But rest assured, there’s to be more progress throughout early 2013. The FTTP On Demand trial is due to kick off in March, a new 220/20Mbps service is being trialled next month and BT will be hitting more milestones this year as it races towards its two-thirds-by-2015 deadline.
Here then is the first Rollout Roundup of 2013 from Recombu Digital.
More than 161,400 homes and businesses get up to 20Mbps speed boost
Though not as momentous and next-gen-tastic as getting some FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) or FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) connections, over 100,000 UK homes and businesses can now get faster ADSL speeds thanks to a BT speed boost.
Speed boosts in North Yorkshire, County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, Lancashire, Cheshire and Cumbria mean that speeds of up to 20Mbps across ADSL lines are now available.
BT says that in most cases this will provide download speeds over double that which was previously available and ISPs selling services on the Openreach network should automatically upgrade customers to the faster speeds.
This of course depends on the type of contract you’re on and as always, the top speeds you’ll actually get are dependent on your distance from your exchange.
Read on to see where the upgrades are taking place and if you’re living or working in any of these areas, use our speed test tool to see if you’re getting a better speed.
