Channel 4 has announced it plans to evolve its 4oD catch up service into an all-digital online proposition, combining live TV and catch-up content in one place.
All 4 will launch at the beginning of 2015, with a whole new interface across three sections – On Demand (past), Now (present) and On Soon (future).
The new branding will roll out across all platforms first, but the new functionality will come to PC, Mac and iOS devices first. Android devices and connected TV services including Virgin Media TiVo and YouView will get the new services later.
The revamped On Demand section will include all of the content you can currently watch on 4oD, but will include extra information about the programmes, including actor bios and galleries.
Taking a leaf out of the 4Now social second screen app, the Now section will let you watch live TV and view extra content like social feeds around the programme in the same way that the 4Now 4 iPad app does.
On Soon will showcase new programme clips and promos letting viewers set reminders and alerts for future shows and watch a selection of exclusive episode premieres before their linear TV broadcast.
David Abraham, chief executive of Channel 4 said: “We think the future of TV viewing lies not with either linear or on-demand, but a creative and visual integration of the two worlds, blending the strengths of both into a single brand.
“We believe All 4 will deliver the most advanced broadcaster response to changing viewer behavior in the digital age, and will help ensure that our content portfolio remains an important, valued part of viewers’ TV consumption for decades to come.”
Keith Underwood, director of strategy and technology at Channel 4 explained the company wants to merge to worlds of online and TV broadcasting and All 4 will allow the company to do this in a seamless way.
C4 launched its Shorts initiative last year, showcasing specially commissioned short form programmes featuring the channel’s talent on 4oD last year. These will now play an integral part in Channel 4’s digital strategy, with a dedicated hub appearing on All 4 when it launches.
