Amazon Studios to film original dramas and comedies in 4K

Amazon Studios will shoot all its original drama and comedy in ultra high-definition from next year.

Amazon will use the format, which displays four times the number of pixels as standard full HD, to shoot content for its Prime and Lovefilm streaming services.

“As a premium original content creator, we’re excited about 4K and the future of Ultra HD technology, particularly as we move into drama series next year,” said Amazon Studios director Roy Price.

“All of the pilots and series we produce next year will be shot in 4K. That includes our first ever drama series that we will greenlight next year – we think customers are going to love watching these series in the highest resolution ever available to consumers and we can’t wait to deliver it.”

Amazon will launch five new comedy and drama pilots in 2014 and viewers will be invited to watch and provide feedback to decide which pilots get made into a series exclusive to view on Prime Instant Video and Amazon’s Lovefilm in the UK.

Among the drama pilots are Bosch, Mozart in the Jungle, The After, The Rebels, and Transparent.

Amazon has also introduced a 4K Ultra HDTV Guide at www.amazon.com/4K. In the guide, customers will find information about the differences between 4K and regular high definition.

Last month Netflix began testing 4K with short video streaming clips. That firm will also shoot its second series of House of Cards in 4K as well.
