Arqiva to buy Spectrum Interactive’s Wi-Fi network for £23.4 million

Arqiva to buy Spectrum Interactive’s Wi-Fi network for £23.4 millionArqiva has announced that it intends to buy Spectrum Interactive’s Wi-Fi network for £23.4 million.

The Wi-Fi network, which mainly covers central London, consists of over 15,500 hotspots in a variety of high street locations and at venues like restaurants, hotels, airports and service stations.

Chances are you’ve used one of Spectrum Interactive’s hotspots before – they appear as ‘FREE Street WiFi’ on your phone, tablet or laptop.

Nicolas Ott, Managing Director, Government, Mobile and Enterprise, Arqiva commenting on the Offer said:

“The strategic fit of Spectrum with Arqiva is compelling and our customers and business will benefit from the 15,500 access points in over 2,100 premium Wi-Fi locations across hotels, restaurants and leisure outlets as well as airports, airline lounges, motorway service station and public locations on high streets. We can accelerate the roll out of Arqiva’s wholesale mobile data offer, whilst enhancing services provided to Spectrum Interactive’s customers.”

It’s not yet known how customers wanting to use Arqiva hotspots will be charged. Previously, Spectrum Interactive paired with Nokia and Selective Media. Access was free until Nokia pulled out, after which access was provided via voucher codes.

Spectrum Interactive has provided Wi-Fi to venues like Beefeater and Brewers Fayre restaurants and Virgin Atlantic and Flybe departure lounges. So it’s likely that you’ll be offered free use of Wi-Fi with your meals or when you’ve checked in.

Arqiva is directly involved with the Digital Switchover, operating and maintaining the infrastructure for Freeview broadcasts. It’s also a member of YouView, which is due to be launched later this week.
