BT Broadband adds the lion’s share of fibre-based broadband sign ups

BT’s latest figures show that BT Broadband remains the UK’s biggest ISP.

The company announced that it added 150,000 new customers in the last three months, taking its total broadband subscriber base to 7,111,000.

This puts is above second-placer Sky, which posted its most recent quarterly results yesterday.

BT’s network division Openreach reveals that 252,000 new customers were added in the last quarter, with BT Retail’s 150,000 new connections accounting for 60 per cent of those.

The lion’s share of these new connections were made by BT Broadband (228,000) with the remaining 111,000 made by ISPs including Sky and TalkTalk.

Sky hasn’t revealed how many of the 110,000 customers it added in the last quarter took Sky Fibre. Historically the company hasn’t been keen to talk about fibre figures, unlike TalkTalk

BT chief executive Gavin Patterson said: “Our strategic investments are delivering. It was another record quarter for fibre take-up and there are now more than 18 million premises with access to our fibre. That number will grow further as the BDUK programme progresses.”

So far, BT has won 46 BDUK (Broadband Delivery for the UK) contracts and is actively building in 36 of these areas.

BDUK projects have seen roughly 170,000 premises in predominantly rural areas connected to superfast fibre-based broadband. Connecting Devon and Somerset recently announced plans to have covered 70,000 premises with superfast broadband by Summer 2014.

BT’s fibre-based network currently covers 18 million UK premises.
