BT Sport Europe: Lineker-fronted footy channel free to BT TV punters

BT’s latest channel BT Sport Europe channel will show UEFA Champions League and Europa League football for free if you’re a BT TV subscriber – and a fiver if you’re not. 

The new channel features former England captain and Walkers crisp hawker Gary Lineker and Rio Ferdinand as co-hosts alongside Jake Humphrey who will present the live European football coverage

Users wanting to watch the content from the BT Sport online app or via BT Mobile will have to pony up an extra £5/month for the privilege of watching live Champions League games was well as Europa League matches. 

As well as giving you access to BT’s European football content, you’ll also get BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN – now rebranded as ‘BT ESPN’ – which is home to live Premier League and FA Cup football matches, Aviva Premiership rugby, WTA tennis, UFC mixed martial arts and Moto GP racing. 

John Petter, chief executive of BT Consumer, said: “When we launched BT Sport we promised to make televised football far more accessible and affordable than it has been to date. We have opened the market to millions of new customers and we want to build on that as BT Sport becomes the undisputed home of European football. 

“We are of course giving our best offer to existing customers – broadband customers will get the new BT Sport Pack for the heavily discounted price of £5 whilst customers who take broadband and TV from us will get it absolutely free. 

“This is a new chapter for European football on TV. BT Sport will show hundreds of live matches throughout the tournament using the very latest technology. Our presenters and experts will also provide the smartest insight and analysis.” 

Freeview viewers will also be able to watch a handful of games for no extra cost through BT Sport Showcase, a standard definition-only channel that will host live Champions League coverage of English football teams. 

BT has also announced that it is set to become the first broadcaster to offer a 4K Ultra HD channel in Europe, with BT Sport Ultra HD due to launch in August.  

The channel will show selected sporting events in 4K including Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup matches plus Aviva Premiership Rugby too. The company will be introducing a brand new Ultra HD-branded set-top box soon, to allow subscribers to stream 4K content over A BT Infinity FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) service.
