This week is going to be very thin on the ground for Rollout Roundup seeing as there’s not much in the way of announcements. While not many new connections have been made available this week there’s been plenty of noise from BT about pledges to connect more homes to superfast broadband in areas where it’s already hard at work.
As well as this, we’ve heard good news from the Ultrafast Underriver project which will looks all but ready to start rolling out 1Gbps FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) broadband to 190 homes and properties around Underriver in Kent (pictured).
CLANNET in North Yorkshire has also expanded its wireless broadband footprint meaning more people can sign up for broadband without having to pony up for line rental every month.

Howay man: BT plans to bring more fibre to the north of England
BT has announced plans to connect thousands more homes and businesses in the North East, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland regions.
This is part of its own commercial rollout plan to upgrade two-thirds of the UK with FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) connections, with a handful of those benefiting from faster FTTP as well.
A further 121,000 homes and businesses across Darlington, Easington, Ebchester, Norton, Wellfield, Dunston, Whickham, Seaton Delaval, Birtley, Beamish, Barnard Castle and Redcar will benefit from faster connections by the end of Spring 2014.
Gigaclear and Ultrafast Underriver hoping to bring 1Gbps to rural Kent
Though this deal isn’t set in stone yet and is dependent upon 190 people registering for Gigaclear’s broadband, all signs point to 1Gbps broadband being rolled out across parts of the Kentish countryside by October this year.
Overwhelmingly positive feedback from local residents, businesses and landowners suggests that work may well begin soon. Rollout should breathe new life into a part of the UK where speeds south of 1Mbps are the norm and 2Mbps is achievable on a good day. Given our struggles last year with getting a decent connection installed here in central London we can empathise.
CLANNET beams wireless broadband to Laceby and Kirby Sigston in North Yorkshire
CLANNET is a community ISP that specialises in bringing wireless broadband to remote locations poorly served by fixed-line solutions.
This week CLANNET expanded its wireless footprint, bringing the villages of Laceby and Kirby Sigston into the fold. Wireless broadband is an effective solution for rural locations as it can provide a fast service in areas where copper ADSL broadband or fibre isn’t available, provided the local terrain is favourable and your home has line of sight to the wireless broadband transmitter.
Speeds on CLANNET’s networks can go as fast as 25Mbps which is head and shoulders above the speeds you normally find in remote rural areas. Another bonus of wireless broadband is as it’s not delivered over a physical line, there’s no need to pay line rental. Installation costs can be a bit more expensive though and you’ll normally have to get an engineer round to install a receiver on your roof.
