Free WiFi comes to Bradford's City Park courtesy of Virgin Media BusinessVirgin Media Business has launched free public WiFi across Bradford’s City Park.

Bradford residents can now hook up with some free WiFi on their phones, tablets or laptops in another public space; last year Virgin Media Business deployed a similar WiFi network in Bridge Street.

As well as giving people some free connectivity on the move, it’s hoped that the foundations put in place by Virgin Media Business will allow mobile operators to improve 3G and 4G coverage in the area.

“Using our superfast fibre network we’ve been able to provide the cities of Leeds and Bradford with superfast Wi-Fi services,” said Kevin Baughan, director of wireless at Virgin Media Business.

“We’ve also laid the foundations to support mobile operators in the future rollout of high capacity overlays for 3G and 4G mobile services using the next generation of small cell technology,” he added.

EE has already launched 4G services in Bradford according to the coverage checker on its site. The other networks aren’t expected to launch 4G until the summer, once the 4G auction has concluded.

Virgin Media and EE already have a cosy relationship with the former using the latter’s network to run its own mobile phone services. EE customers can also benefit from free access to Virgin Media’s WiFi network on the London Underground. It’s assumed that Virgin Media will launch its own 4G service at some point in the future, but there’s been nothing but speculation on that front just yet.
