Stephen King’s Under The Dome set for Lovefilm

UK video-on-demand service Lovefilm will be streaming Stephen King’s new science fiction thriller series Under The Dome later in the autumn.

The new CBS Studios-produced series will also air on Channel 5 this autumn prior to being available on the streaming service.

Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, Under The Dome tells the story of a small town that is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by a massive transparent dome. Lost producer Brian Vaughan and ER showrunner Neal Baer developed the show for TV.

Read Recombu Digital’s guide to LovefilmThe deal between Lovefilm-owner Amazon and CBS Studios was part of the series’ original commission, and Amazon will also show the 13-episode series via its subscription service in the US.

Under The Dome was initially developed by premium US cable network Showtime before being moved over to CBS, its free-to-air sister network.

The US broadcast showing will precede Amazon’s release of each new episode by only a few days, although it’s not known whether Lovefilm viewers will get the same quick access.

“We wouldn’t have done Under the Dome unless we knew we had it backed up 100 per cent by the Amazon deal, and combining Amazon with the international syndication deal makes Under the Dome profitable immediately,” Les Moonves, chairman of CBS, told the LA Times.

The series has also been sold into 200 territories prior to its launch including Germany, France, Australia and Canada. The series starts in the US in June prior to its UK debut.
