Netflix has announced that it’s secure exclusive streaming rights to Batman prequel series Gotham once it’s finished its UK run on Channel 5.
The origin series follows Ben McKenzie of The O.C. fame as a young Detective (and future Commissioner) James Gordon and the recently orphaned Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) around the streets of Gotham City before the arrival of the caped crusader.
Netflix subscribers will be able to watch the series in 2015. The deal marks the first time Netflix has been able to secure streaming rights for a single show in all of the territories it operates.
“While we typically license our programming country by country, we have licensed this very special series to Netflix on a multi-territory basis. Netflix is a perfect home for Gotham following its initial broadcast in each respective country, giving Netflix subscribers the opportunity to catch-up prior to the new season, whether they’re already fans or discovering it for the first time,” said Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, president of Warner Bros Worldwide Television Distribution.
Of course, us Brits will be able to watch the series for no extra cost once it comes to Channel 5 later this year. Gotham is first due to air in the US on Fox, with the pilot scheduled for September 22.
Channel 5 hasn’t announced when it’ll be broadcasting the show yet, but it’s pencilled in a vague ‘Autumn 2014’ launch date. As well as broadcasting in standard definition and on HD on Sky and Virgin Media, viewers will also be able to stream episodes of Gotham on Demand 5.
Netflix is available to stream online (PC and Mac), on iOS and Android devices, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Virgin Media TiVo, selected smart TVs, Roku, Chromecast and Apple TV.
