Plusnet launching YouView-based TV service ‘soon’

Plusnet’s long-awaited TV service could soon be a reality, according to an official post made in the YouView community forum.

The Sheffield-based ISP has been promising a TV service since 2013 but nothing has so far materialised beyond a couple of trials with employees and selected customers.

Back in August of last year, the internet service provider claimed its trial was “going very well” but failed to elucidate beyond that, leading some to wonder whether the prospective service had been shelved.

However, a post made to the YouView support forums by an official representative, has claimed that the service will, in fact, be “launching soon” and customers have been invited to register their interest.

The post, which was made by a YouView staff member named ‘Phil’ simply said: “We can confirm that TV from Plusnet will be launching soon. It will be available exclusively to existing Plusnet Unlimited Fibre customers. These customers can register their interest via the Plusnet member centre here https://portal.plus.net/my.html.”

No information was given regarding what channels the service will offer when it launches, or indeed how “soon” we can expect to clap eyes on it.

Given that previous trials saw customers getting BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN, we’d expect that these channels will be offered to all Plusnet TV punters. It’s possible that Netflix will also come along for the ride

Plusnet currently offers phone and broadband packages to customers and the addition of a TV service would see the company able to compete with the likes of EE, TalkTalk and Virgin Media by offering folks ‘triple-play’ packages.

Other competitors currently offer home phone, broadband, TV and mobile services though. With Sky due to launch a mobile service in 2016, TalkTalk giving away free mobile SIMs to TV customers and BT posed to snap up EE, Plusnet might have to add even more to its roster.
